Plain Label Podcast Episode 9 - Die Hard & Oldboy

It’s Marvel Movie month, and we’ve had enough talking about Marvel Movies! For this episode Eric and Rachel discuss the action classic Die Hard and the South Korean revenge film Oldboy!

They begin the show by discussing the classic action film Die Hard. The hosts gush on the tone and performances in the film and talk about their favorite scenes in this beloved 1988 movie. They move on and discuss Oldboy, and we finally get a bit of a disagreement! The hosts banter back and forth and explain why one didn’t enjoy the movie, and the other thinks this may be on of their favorite movies of all time!

Plain Label Podcast Episode 8 - Marvel Movie Month Part 2

In case you couldn’t get enough of Marvel’s The Avengers, Rachel and Eric talk about it and the first franchise of super-heroes teams in film, The X-Men!

They begin the show by discussing The Avengers including spoilers, so if you’re one of the 10 people in North American who hasn’t seen the film yet, pause the podcast and listen after you’ve seen the movie. After discussing that film the hosts disect the X-Men franchise including the films X-Men, X2, X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men: First Class!

Plain Label Podcast Episode 7 - Marvel Movie Month Part 1

Just in time for Marvel’s The Avengers, Rachel and Eric talk about the movies that led up to one of this summer’s most anticipated films.

They begin the show by discussing the Iron Man and how Robert Downey Jr makes the film. They move on to The Incredible Hulk and Eric compares this film with the Ang Lee version from a few years ago. The two of them sour on the CGI and the video game aspects of the ending of the film. They continue on with their disappointment with a discussion on Iron Man 2. The year 2011 brings them around however, as they gush about the cast and story of Thor before wrapping up this marathon discussion with a breakdown of Captain America.

Plain Label Podcast Episode 6 - Baseball Movies

It’s baseball season! Rachel and Eric share their love of America’s pastime by discussing two of their favorite baseball films: Major League and A League of Their Own.

They begin the show by discussing the characters and comedy of Major League, explaining how this film taught them curse words. Eric goes into some detail of what makes this possibly one of the most quotable films of all time before the two move on, and discuss Penny Marshall’s A League of Their Own. Rachel describes how this is one of her childhood favorites and Eric attempts to explain his problems with the film. Before rounding out the show the two hosts briefly discuss some of their favorite other baseball films.

Low Concept 2 - Comix Boogaloo

In this episode Eric is joined by a handful of guests as they discuss Low Concept 2 - Comix Boogaloo. Eric is joined by the men behind the scenes in this anthology, Jon Westhoff and Bobgar Ornelas first, and they discuss what goes into editing the anthology, as well as their story, “In Your Time Travels”. Jon then discusses his second story “Isn’t it Cryonic” with artist Harry Moyer, based on a song by Tub Ring.

Zack Kruse joins the fray with a discussion on his story “The Tentacled Terror From Beyond” with artist Andrew Frasier. Zack delves into the depths of the horror comic genre with this tale and for those that know Zack, yes, he does mention Ditko!

Ben Tiede comes on to talk about his work, “Scuba Frog in The Planet of the Flies” starring everyone’s favorite anthropomorphic frog, Scuba Frog! Ben talks about his inspirations for Scuba Frog but reminds everyone that it’s not a Furry Comic!

Dwight Clark rounds out the discussion by opening up with the future of Low Concept before the two of us get into our project “Red Summer”. Dwight and I break down the true story of Willie Brown in Omaha in 1919, his arrest and the mob that’s out to get him. Dwight goes into detail about the artistic side of the story and the challenges he faced while working on the project. We get into artistic styles and how taste changes as we age specifically discussing Neil Adams, Kent Williams, and Bill Sienkiewicz. Eric then gets into the Sidebar discussion as we hear the origin of Sidebar, and get in a little talk about Prince!

Plain Label Podcast: Special Edition - 2012 Baseball Preview

In this special edition of the Plain Label Podcast, Eric is joined by fellow baseball fans Travis Siebrass and Marcus Herring to discuss their favorite teams and a prediction for the 2012 season. Travis starts things off explaining how he became a fan of the woeful Chicago Cubs, and we go through the starting line-up and rotation, all the while asking, exactly how bad is this team going to be? Marcus takes us to the opposite end of the spectrum with a look at the Boston Red Sox. After a rundown of the starters at each position and the pitching rotation we end with Eric’s look at the Atlanta Braves. After our initial discussion Craig Meister joined me to talk about his beloved Miami Marlins who open a new stadium in 2012 filled with a new attitude and new, volatile players. We then move into prediction time where the playoffs are predicted to look like this:

Plain Label Podcast Episode 3 - Leap Year & The Ides of March


In this episode, Eric and Rachel finish off their discussion of romantic comedies with the 2010 film Leap Year. They discuss how truly awful the film is, including an interesting quote from lead actor Matthew Goode. They discuss feeling bad for Amy Adams, and how ugly equals Oscars. The hosts break formula and move on to the 2011 film The Ides of March. They start off discussing Ryan Gosling performance and his character of Steven. After a quick plot summary, the hosts go back and forth on Gosling and if he can act with Paul Giamatti, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and George Clooney. They then move on to the performance of Evan Rachel Wood, and discuss her as an actress, and Rachel suggests a new look for the young woman.

After wrapping up the film, Craig Mesiter stops by to discuss the 365 movies in 365 days challenge before the hosts get into the IMDb Top 250 with films 51-75.
